Lightning Maroon vs Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish: Pattern, Lineage, Price Comparison

Neutral side-by-side from Fast Aquatics editorial. Both are Premnas biaculeatus - one is the rarest captive-bred Maroon pattern in the hobby, the other is the value-tier visual hit. We list both lineages in our marketplace.

Lightning Maroon

Species
Premnas biaculeatus
Originator
Single wild specimen collected in Papua New Guinea, Fisherman's Island reef, approximately 2008. Brought into captive breeding by Matt Pedersen working with Sea & Reef Aquaculture.
Pattern
Branching maze-like scribble pattern across flanks instead of three clean white bars. No two Lightnings have identical patterning.
Adult size
Female 5-6 inches, male 2.5-3 inches. Sexual dimorphism is extreme in Maroons.
Typical price
$200-800 per fish depending on pattern coverage and grade. Heavy scribble lightning patterns at the high end.
Keeper notes
The signature rare Maroon. Pattern saturates as the fish matures, typically locking in around 14-18 months. Aggression matches standard Maroons - keep one pair per tank.

Gold Stripe Maroon

Species
Premnas biaculeatus
Originator
Wild-collected Sumatran population, captive-bred since the 1990s by multiple US and SE Asian breeders. ORA, Sea & Reef, and Bali Aquarich all maintain stable lines.
Pattern
Three horizontal yellow-gold bars where standard Maroons have white bars. Color holds yellow into adulthood instead of fading.
Adult size
Female 5-6 inches, male 2.5-3 inches. Identical body size to Lightning lineage.
Typical price
$45-100 per fish for captive-bred juveniles. Pairs $120-220.
Keeper notes
The accessible visual upgrade over a standard White Stripe Maroon. Captive-bred stock is hardy, well-tested, and widely available year-round.

Husbandry overlap

Both are the same species and share identical care. 30 gallon minimum for a pair, 78-82F, salinity 1.024-1.026. Maroons are the largest and most aggressive clownfish - never house with other clown species. Both lineages naturally host Entacmaea quadricolor (Bubble Tip Anemone), and both will host the same range of secondary anemones in captivity. Diet is omnivorous, accept frozen mysis, pellets, and nori. Maroons can live 20+ years in captivity.

Pick by intent

Choose Lightning Maroon if

You want a centerpiece fish that no two hobbyists in your area will have identical. Pattern is genuinely unique per specimen. Budget allows $300+ and you understand the pattern continues developing for 12-18 months after purchase.

Choose Gold Stripe Maroon if

You want the dramatic Maroon body shape and aggression-tested hardiness at a normal clownfish price point. Gold bars read clearly across a tank and the line is bulletproof captive-bred. Best entry point into Premnas for new keepers.
