Onyx Percula vs Picasso Percula: Pattern, Lineage, Price Comparison

Neutral side-by-side of two captive-bred Percula pattern variants from competing US hatcheries. Same species, very different visual outcomes. One is a solid-flank black-on-orange look. The other is a chaotic asymmetric bar pattern graded A through C. We list both lineages from Fast Aquatics vendors.

Onyx Percula

Species
Amphiprion percula (true Percula, not Ocellaris)
Originator lineage
Developed and stabilized by ORA (Oceans, Reefs & Aquariums) in Florida. Selective breeding from Solomon Islands wild-collected Percula expressing extended black body coverage.
Pattern
Solid black flanks from gill plate to peduncle with three clean white bars and a fully orange face mask. Black coverage intensifies with age - juveniles show less than 50% black coverage, mature adults show 80-95%.
Adult color timeline
Full adult coloration locks in at 18-24 months. Juveniles are not visually impressive - buy on lineage trust, not on the juvenile photo.
Adult size
2.5-3 inches female, 1.75-2.25 inches male. Percula run smaller than Ocellaris.
Typical price
$60-120 per fish for ORA captive-bred Onyx juveniles. Adult breeding pairs $250-450.
Keeper notes
True Percula behavior is slightly more reserved than Ocellaris. Onyx pattern is the most popular solid-color Percula in the US trade and represents a clean, finished adult aesthetic.

Picasso Percula

Species
Amphiprion percula (true Percula, not Ocellaris)
Originator lineage
Developed and trade-stabilized by Sea & Reef Aquaculture in Maine. Original Picasso line documented from a single irregularly-barred Solomon Islands Percula in the mid-2000s, now bred in volume with consistent pattern outcomes.
Pattern
White bars are broken, connected, or asymmetric across the body. Grade A shows maximum white connectivity and irregular bar fusion. Grade B is moderate irregularity. Grade C is mild asymmetry with most bar structure still recognizable.
Adult color timeline
Pattern is visible at juvenile stage (1.5 inches) and locks at 12-18 months. Pattern grade does not significantly change after juvenile size.
Adult size
2.5-3 inches female, 1.75-2.25 inches male. Identical body size to Onyx lineage.
Typical price
$80-150 Grade C, $150-220 Grade B, $200-300+ Grade A. Top-pattern Grade A "Platinum" releases occasionally clear $400.
Keeper notes
The grade system means you pay for visible pattern - what you see at purchase is what you keep. No long maturation wait for color development.

Husbandry overlap

Both are Amphiprion percula and share identical care requirements. 20 gallon minimum for a single pair, 78-82F, salinity 1.024-1.026. Both ship pre-trained to dry food from the captive-bred larval rearing process. Percula naturally host Heteractis magnifica in the wild but in captivity will accept Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) which is the safer, more practical hosting choice. Quarantine 14-21 days before adding to a reef. Pair bonding is straightforward when introducing a smaller juvenile to a larger established individual - Percula are sequential hermaphrodites and the larger fish becomes female. Both lineages live 15-20 years with stable husbandry.

Pick by intent

Choose Onyx Percula if

You want a finished, clean, high-contrast adult aesthetic and you're willing to wait 18-24 months for the black coverage to develop fully. The mature look is one of the most striking solid-color Percula presentations in the hobby. Best for keepers planning a long-term display where the centerpiece pair has time to mature.

Choose Picasso Percula if

You want visible pattern at purchase, a clear grade-based pricing structure, and a fish where no two individuals look identical. Best for collectors who want pattern variety, are buying multiple Perculas for visual contrast, or want to grade-shop at a specific budget. Pattern does not change after juvenile size so what you buy is what you keep.
