ORA vs Sea & Reef Clownfish: Breeder Lineage, Strains, Price Comparison

Neutral side-by-side of the two largest captive-bred clownfish hatcheries in the United States. Both ship coast-to-coast through aquatic distributors. The choice usually comes down to which signature strain you want, not which hatchery is better - both produce industry-grade stock.

ORA (Oceans, Reefs & Aquariums)

Location
Fort Pierce, Florida. Founded 1991, captive-breeding marine ornamentals since the early 1980s under earlier leadership.
Signature clownfish strains
Wyoming White (origin strain, white-body Ocellaris from 2009 ORA breeding program), Snowflake, MochaVinci, Black Storm, Snow Onyx Percula, ORA Picasso.
Beyond clowns
Also originated Pearlberry Acropora and Hawkins Echinata - two of the most-traded captive-propagated SPS strains in the US hobby. ORA captive-breeds 60+ marine fish species and ships through wholesale distribution.
Typical price
$30-60 standard Ocellaris/Percula, $40-100 Wyoming White and Snowflake variants, $80-150 high-grade Snow Onyx and Black Storm.
Distribution
Wholesale only - retailed through authorized LFS network and major online vendors. Not direct-to-consumer.
Keeper notes
The longest-running US captive marine breeder. Bloodline records are decades deep. Wyoming White is the gold-standard solid-white Ocellaris in the trade.

Sea & Reef Aquaculture

Location
Franklin, Maine. Founded by Dr. Soren Hansen, marine biologist and aquaculture researcher. Operating since the mid-2000s.
Signature clownfish strains
Picasso Percula (Grade A-C), Davinci Ocellaris, Mocha Storm, Phantom, Domino, Bali Aquarich-collaboration strains. Also produced the original Lightning Maroon offspring with Matt Pedersen.
Beyond clowns
Focus is overwhelmingly clownfish strains plus select damsels and dottybacks. Smaller species catalog than ORA but deeper clownfish strain library.
Typical price
$30-70 standard Ocellaris, $80-180 Davinci and Mocha Storm, $100-300 Grade A Picasso Percula.
Distribution
Wholesale through aquatic distributors plus direct vendor partnerships. Tagged individually with grade designations on premium strains.
Keeper notes
Strain-pattern innovation leader of the last decade. Picasso grade system is the industry reference for asymmetric-bar Perculas. Strong working relationships with hobbyist breeders for new strain development.

Husbandry overlap

Both hatcheries raise stock on commercial pellet from larval stage forward, so all fish ship pre-trained to dry food and accept frozen mysis, brine, and reef pellet immediately. Captive-bred clownfish are dramatically hardier than wild-caught, tolerate wider parameter swings, and have far lower disease load. 20 gallon minimum for a single pair, 78-82F, salinity 1.024-1.026. Both will host the same range of anemones - Bubble Tip is the most universally accepted across all clown species from either hatchery. Quarantine is still recommended for 14-21 days, but the disease risk is order-of-magnitude lower than wild import stock. Both hatcheries tag generations with bloodline records, so high-grade pattern fish can be traced to parent pairs.

Pick by intent

Choose ORA if

You want the origin lineage on Wyoming White, Snow Onyx Percula, or any of the white-body Ocellaris variants ORA pioneered. Also the right call if you're stocking multiple marine species from one source - their catalog covers gobies, blennies, basslets, and SPS coral frags from the same trusted aquaculture program.

Choose Sea & Reef if

You're after asymmetric Picasso patterns, Davinci or Storm-variant strains, or you want to buy by grade designation A through C with documented pattern criteria. Sea & Reef ships more pattern innovation per year and works directly with hobbyist breeders on new strain releases.
