Stendker vs Forrest Discus: Lineage, Hardiness, Price Comparison

Neutral side-by-side comparison of two captive-bred Discus sources US hobbyists actually buy from. One is the oldest continuous Discus hatchery in the world. The other is the most-recommended domestic breeder for new keepers in North America. We list both lineages in our marketplace.

Stendker Diskuszucht

Origin
Bellheim, Germany. Founded by Eugen Stendker in 1954, now run by Joerg Stendker. Oldest continuously operated captive Discus hatchery in the world.
Lineage
70+ years of selective breeding for tap-water tolerance, parasite resistance, and consistent strain coloration. Strains include Pigeon Blood, Marlboro Red, Blue Diamond, Red Turquoise, Snow White, Cobalt.
Water requirements
Tolerates pH 6.5-8.0 and GH up to 20. Designed to thrive on dechlorinated municipal tap water - no RO required for most US zip codes.
Typical size shipped
2.5-4 inch juveniles. Imported into US via authorized regional importers including Wattley Discus (Florida) and Discus Hans (Canada distribution).
Typical price
$80-200 per juvenile depending on strain. Adult breeding pairs $400-900.
Keeper notes
The most forgiving captive Discus available. Survives temperature swings and parameter shifts that kill F1 wild-line stock. Ideal first-Discus source.

Forrest Discus

Origin
Texas, USA. Family-run breeder shipping domestically since the 2000s. Smaller operation than Stendker but with strong reputation in US hobby forums.
Lineage
F1+ stock derived from Asian breeder imports plus selected wild Heckel and Brown Discus genetics. Strains include Red Cover, Leopard Snakeskin, Blue Scorpion, Pigeon Blood Red.
Water requirements
Prefers softer water, pH 6.0-7.2, GH under 10. RO blending recommended in hard-water regions. Less tap-tolerant than Stendker but more vibrant pattern depth.
Typical size shipped
3-5 inch juveniles to subadults. Direct domestic overnight shipping from Texas - no import broker or international holding period.
Typical price
$40-150 per fish depending on strain and size. Pricing is significantly lower than imported Stendker for comparable grade.
Keeper notes
Strong pattern saturation and competitive pricing. Domestic shipping means lower stress in transit. Best value-per-quality option for US buyers with soft water.

Husbandry overlap

Both lines require 75 gallons minimum for a group of six, temperature 82-86F (Discus run warmer than typical tropicals), heavy filtration with frequent water changes, and a diet centered on beef heart, frozen bloodworms, and premium pellet. Both ship best as juveniles at 2.5-4 inches - smaller fish acclimate faster, larger adults bring proportional shipping stress. Avoid mixing Discus from different sources during the first 6 months to prevent parasite cross-contamination. Quarantine new arrivals in a bare-bottom tank for 30 days before adding to a display. Both lineages reach adult size 6-8 inches at 18-24 months and can live 10-15 years with stable husbandry.

Pick by intent

Choose Stendker if

You have hard tap water, want the hardiest captive Discus genetics available, and want a strain catalog backed by 70 years of breeding records. Higher cost is offset by survival rate - Stendker stock is famously hard to kill compared to typical captive-bred Discus.

Choose Forrest Discus if

You have soft or RO-blended water, want domestic US overnight shipping without international import lag, and prefer deeper pattern saturation per dollar. Best price-to-quality ratio for buyers in soft-water regions or those willing to run RO.
