Why is my cichlid digging in the sand?

Quick answerCichlids dig for territory + breeding behavior + finding food. Most digging is normal. Massive crater-building is pre-spawning behavior.

Possible causes (4)

1. Pre-spawning behavior

Many cichlids dig pits in sand before spawning. Pair-bonded cichlids excavate together.

2. Territory marking

Cichlids rearrange aquascape to claim territory. Normal in mbuna + South American setups.

3. Looking for food

Some species (geophagus, eartheaters) sift sand for food particles by mouth.

4. Stress or boredom

In barren tanks, cichlids dig from boredom. Add more rockwork + caves.

What to do next

Test water first - many "behavior" issues are actually water-quality problems. Use the water parameter checker to score your test results, the disease symptom matcher if you observe physical signs, or the general diagnoser to narrow further. Browse the disease database if illness is suspected.
