Why is my fish blowing bubbles at the surface?

Quick answerSome species (bettas, gouramis) build bubble nests as breeding behavior - completely normal. Other gasping behaviors at surface are oxygen problems requiring action.

Possible causes (3)

1. Bubble nest building (bettas, gouramis)

Male bettas + gouramis blow bubbles at surface to build nest for eggs. Normal pre-breeding behavior.

2. Surface gasping (oxygen issue)

Different from bubble blowing - fish gulping air at surface = LOW oxygen. Add aeration immediately.

3. Habitual surface feeders

Hatchetfish, killifish, splash tetras hover near surface. Normal.

What to do next

Test water first - many "behavior" issues are actually water-quality problems. Use the water parameter checker to score your test results, the disease symptom matcher if you observe physical signs, or the general diagnoser to narrow further. Browse the disease database if illness is suspected.
