Cycling troubleshooting

My fish died during cycling - what now?

Quick answerFish death during fish-in cycling is sadly common. Damage is done; focus on saving remaining fish. Aggressive water changes + Prime + reduce feeding. Switch to fishless cycling for any future tanks.

Action steps (6)

1. Test water immediately

Dose Seachem Prime which detoxifies ammonia for 24-48 hours. Verify temperature + pH. Identify if ammonia or nitrite spiked.

2. Massive water change (50%+)

Drop ammonia + nitrite via dilution. Match temperature + pH of replacement water. Use Prime in new water.

3. Daily Prime + small water changes

For the next 2 weeks: 25% daily water change with Prime. Test daily. Bacteria will catch up; fish survive if you can keep parameters detoxified.

4. Reduce feeding to once every 2-3 days

Less food = less waste = less ammonia. Fish can survive a week without food in the cycling phase.

5. Add bottled bacteria

Dose Bio-Spira or Stability daily for 7-14 days. Speeds bacterial colonization to take pressure off fish.

6. For future tanks: NEVER fish-in cycle

Fishless cycling with pure ammonia + bottled bacteria is humane + faster + cheaper. Don't repeat this mistake.
