Mouth Rot (Columnaris on Mouth)

Mouth rot is a bacterial infection that causes white/grey patches around the fish mouth, eroding lip + jaw tissue. Often confused with fungus; aggressive variant kills within days.

Severity: High - aggressive variant kills within 48-72 hours

Symptoms

Cause

Stress + poor water quality triggers bacterial overgrowth (Flavobacterium columnare). Often follows minor injuries.

Treatment

Always treat in a separate quarantine tank. Most medications are toxic to coral, invertebrates, and live rock biology.

Kanaplex. Treat in QT 7-10 days. Most effective antibiotic for mouth rot.
Furan-2. Alternative for milder cases. 5-7 day course.

Prevention

Pristine water + reduce stress + treat injuries promptly.
