The point of having a threshold at all

Free-shipping thresholds are the single most reliable lever for raising average order value (AOV) in livestock e-commerce. The data is consistent across categories: customers who see a free-shipping threshold on a product card spend roughly 1.4x more per order than customers who do not, and the boxes are larger and healthier when they ship.

For Living Guarantee Members, the threshold is doing extra work. When a customer files an approved claim and takes the 120% store credit (most do, by design), they come back to your store specifically to spend that credit. If your threshold is set sensibly, they stack the credit + new livestock and hit it. The replacement scenario that would have cost you a frustrated customer becomes a repeat order at full retail with no shipping cost reimbursement on your end.

Threshold benchmarks by category

Vendor typeRecommended thresholdWhy
Frag / invert specialists (low unit price, similar shipping cost regardless of contents)$79AOV is naturally low for frag-pack vendors. A $79 threshold is hit on the second or third frag in most carts.
Mid-tier marine fish, freshwater fish$99 - $129The sweet spot for most reef fish vendors. Above $129 customers start to feel the threshold is unattainable.
Coral grow-out farms (named cultivars, premium fragging)$149Customers shopping cultivars are already prepared to spend more per order; threshold should reflect that.
Premium / large-specimen vendors (rays, sharks, large angels, anemones)$199 - $249Genuine shipping cost is high (next-day air, large boxes, oxygen). Customers expect a higher threshold for this category and do not perceive it as unfair.
Wholesale-only vendors$499+B2B AOV is significantly higher; threshold should align with how shop owners actually order.

How the threshold flows through our system

When a customer's cart subtotal at your store hits the threshold:

The accounting is clean: the customer never knows what the label cost. You absorb the difference. The takeaway is that you need to set your threshold high enough that the AOV uplift comfortably covers the absorbed shipping cost.

Rule of thumb. Set your threshold at roughly 5x your average shipping label cost. If your typical box ships at $40, set the threshold at $200. If it ships at $25, set it at $125. Below 5x, you are giving away too much shipping margin. Above 8x, the threshold becomes unattainable and customers stop trying to hit it.

The replacement-includes-free-shipping toggle

You can also opt to ship Living Guarantee replacement orders free regardless of cart size. This is separate from the threshold - it applies only to the no-charge replacement orders that come from approved claims.

Why turn this on:

Why some vendors leave it off: high-cost specimens (rays, sharks, large angels) where a single replacement shipment can cost $80+ to send. For those vendors, the threshold-based path makes more sense - the customer is shown how much to add to hit free shipping, and most do.

Communication on your listing pages

Your threshold is automatically displayed under the "Add to Cart" button on every listing page once it is set in the dashboard. Format: "[Vendor Name] ships free at $X within 1-2 business days."

You do not need to write copy for it. If you want to override it (custom messaging, seasonal promo) reach out to ops and we can manually adjust your vendor profile description.

What to revisit every 90 days

Setting it

Sign in to your vendor dashboard → and open the Settings tab. The Free Shipping Threshold panel is right below the Subscription panel. Set the dollar threshold, optionally enable replacement-includes-free-shipping, click save. Changes take effect on every new order placed after that moment.
