Why size matters here
Most pet store labeling pretends a 10-gallon can hold a community of small tropicals. It mostly cannot, with a few exceptions. The footprint is too small for swimming-space-demanding species and the water volume is too small for ammonia buffering during accidents. Stock conservatively.
Best species for a 10-gallon (FW)
Single centerpiece options
- Betta splendens (1): the classic 10g resident. Plus 6-8 ember tetras OR a shrimp colony. Plus snails. Betta care guide.
- Honey gourami pair: 10g works for a bonded pair
- Pea puffers (3-4): heavily planted, snail-fed. Demanding but iconic 10g build.
Shrimp-focused
- Cherry shrimp colony (20+): the easiest, most rewarding 10g. Add nerite snails. Caridina also works in dedicated soft-water 10g.
- Crystal Red breeding tank: for serious Caridina keepers
Schooling micro fish
- Ember tetras (8-10) + cherry shrimp + nerites
- Chili rasboras (10-12) + cherry shrimp - softwater biotope
- Celestial Pearl Danios (8-10): need cooler water, heavily planted
- Endler's livebearers (5-7): males only to avoid breeding overload
Small bottom dwellers
- Pygmy corydoras (6+): mid-water cories that work in 10g (regular cories don't)
- Otocinclus (3-4): only in mature, algae-rich tanks
What NOT to keep in a 10-gallon
- Goldfish: any kind, ever. They produce too much waste and grow large.
- Most cichlids: too aggressive, too territorial
- Plecos: common Plecos hit 18 inches
- Iridescent / Bala sharks: grow to 12+ inches
- Standard Corydoras (paleatus, sterbai, etc.): need bigger swimming space, group of 6+ - move up to a 20-long
- Angelfish, discus: need 30+ gallons minimum
- Most rainbowfish, barbs: need horizontal swim space
- Saltwater anything except a pico shrimp/snail tank: 10g saltwater is hard, even Pico Reefs are usually 5-7 gallon AIO designs
