Why 75 gallons is the sweet spot
A 75g reef gives you room for a true centerpiece fish (Yellow Tang) without the parameter complexity of larger systems. Standard 75g dimensions (48 x 18 x 21) provide horizontal swim space the typical 40-breeder lacks. The water volume buffers temperature and chemical swings while staying manageable for water changes.
Sample fish stocking (final goal)
- 1 pair Ocellaris or Percula clownfish - bonded juveniles or designer lineage like Wyoming White
- 1 Yellow Tang - Z. flavescens, captive-bred Biota stock preferred
- 1 Royal Gramma - G. loreto, peaceful basslet
- 1 Six-line Wrasse OR a Fairy Wrasse - flatworm control + activity (skip if planning peaceful tank)
- 2-3 Bartlett's Anthias - schooling color in upper water column
- 1 Yellow Watchman Goby + Tiger Pistol Shrimp pair - sandbed entertainment
- 2-3 Banggai Cardinalfish - captive-bred, mid-water schooling
- 1 Mandarin (after 12+ months mature copepod population)
Total: ~13-14 fish. Stocking density is moderate - leaves room for parameter recovery.
Order of addition (over 6-12 months)
- Months 1-2: Cycle, then add CUC (snails, hermits) and Royal Gramma
- Month 3: Clownfish pair
- Month 4: Banggai Cardinalfish
- Month 5: Watchman + Pistol pair
- Month 6: Anthias trio (introduce together)
- Month 7: Yellow Tang (after copper QT)
- Month 8: Wrasse
- Months 12+: Mandarin (only after mature pod population)
What NOT to put in a 75 reef
- Multiple tangs: 75g supports one tang, not two
- Large angels (Emperor, Queen): need 180+ gal
- Triggers, large groupers: too aggressive for reef
- Multiple aggressive damselfish: they'll harass everything else
- Two clownfish species: stick with one species, even one bonded pair
- Carpet anemones: need 90+ gal
- Open Brain coral + branching SPS in same tank: chemical warfare
Coral plan
For mixed reef:
- Foreground / lower tank: Zoanthids, mushrooms, Ricordea, Acanthastrea, Goniopora, plate corals
- Mid-tank: Hammer, Frogspawn, Torch, Brain corals, Trachyphyllia
- Upper tank: SPS - Acropora millepora, Stylophora, Birdsnest, Montipora cap
Equipment
- Lighting: 2x AI Hydra 32, Radion XR15 G6 (mid-tier), or 2x Kessil A360X for SPS-capable
- Flow: 2x MP10 or MP40 power heads + return pump
- Sump + skimmer: 20-30g sump, Reef Octopus or Bubble Magus rated for 100g
- Heater: 200-300W with controller
- RO/DI: 75 GPD unit minimum
- Test kits: Salifert (alk, calc, mag), Hanna phosphate ULR + nitrate ISE
- Reef controller: Apex (full-featured) or Hydros (simpler) for SPS-keeping
Recurring costs
Monthly: $30-80 for salt mix, food, top-off, tests. Annually: $200-400 in livestock additions and frag purchases. Periodic: bulb/LED upgrades, equipment replacement.
Other reef stocking guides: 30-gallon nano reef, 120-gallon reef, 180-gallon mixed reef.
