Why soft coral matters

Soft coral tolerates parameter swings, mediocre light, low flow, and inconsistent feeding. New reefers should start with zoanthids, mushrooms, leathers, and xenia. The reefkeeper who masters soft coral husbandry over 12 months emerges with the discipline to attempt LPS, then SPS.

Beyond beginner status, soft coral never stops being interesting. The zoanthid and Bounce mushroom named-cultivar economies parallel Acropora in scope - hundreds of distinct morphs, premium pricing tiers, dedicated keeper communities. Some serious reefers run all-soft "garden reefs" that rival the visual complexity of any SPS system.

Care basics

• Light: 50-200 PAR (most species); 200-300 PAR for Bounce mushrooms and high-color zoa cultivars
• Flow: low to moderate; xenia and Kenya tree drift with low flow
• Feeding: photosynthetic species need minimal feeding; sun coral demands target feeding
• Aggression: some palys release palytoxin (handle with gloves and goggles); xenia and GSP are invasive growers
