Month-by-month tasks
Month 1: Plan + research• Research tank size + livestock budget
• Read setup guide for your tank type
• Pick freshwater or saltwater track
• Visit local fish stores to see tanks in person
Month 2: Buy equipment + setup• Buy tank + stand + core equipment
• Aquascape with substrate + hardscape
• Fill with treated water
• Run all equipment 24-48 hours dry-test
Month 3: Cycle the tank• Add bottled bacteria + ammonia source
• Test ammonia + nitrite + nitrate every 3 days
• Wait 2-6 weeks until cycle complete
• Do a 50% water change before stocking
Month 4: First livestock• Add CUC (saltwater) or starter fish (freshwater)
• Watch parameters daily for 7 days
• Establish weekly maintenance routine
• Set up quarantine tank for next purchases
Month 5: Scale stocking• Add second wave of fish (after QT)
• Add primary plants/coral
• Track parameters in a log
• Adjust feeding to match bio-load
Month 6: Mature parameters• Coralline algae appears (saltwater)
• Plants establish + propagate (freshwater)
• Parameters stabilize - shift to monthly tests
• Identify any failing equipment for replacement
Month 7: Add complexity• Add second school or secondary species
• Start coral/plant frags from your collection
• Network with local aquarium club for trades
• Plan for any equipment upgrades
Month 8: Optimize maintenance• Cut maintenance time by automating ATO + dosing
• Switch to digital test kits if budget allows
• Establish backup plan for power outages
• Set up alerts via aquarium controller
Month 9: Advanced stocking• Add advanced species (SPS coral, picky fish)
• Refine feeding schedule
• Address any persistent algae issues
• Document the tank with photos
Month 10: Long-term health• Replace mechanical filtration
• Service skimmer (saltwater)
• Trim plants aggressively (freshwater)
• Sand vacuum + glass cleaning
Month 11: Holiday prep• Build emergency contact list (vacation feeder)
• Stockpile food + RODI for travel
• Set up auto-feeders if traveling
• Backup power for cold-climate tanks
Month 12: Year 1 review• Calculate total spent vs budget
• Review what worked + what failed
• Plan year 2 upgrades + livestock additions
• Replace heater (preventive)
What comes after year 1
Year 2+ shifts focus from acute care (parameters, feeding) to chronic care (tank longevity, livestock rotation, equipment refresh). Replace heaters, refresh substrate, document what works, then start your second tank with the playbook you've refined.
