Crappie are tricky in small ponds - they're schooling fish that need depth and structure (8+ feet of water + brush piles or submerged trees). Stock them only in deeper structured ponds 5+ acres. In smaller ponds they outcompete bluegill and cause stunted bream populations. Where they fit, they fight well on light tackle and are excellent table fare. Black crappie tolerates clearer water better than white crappie.
