Threadfin ShadDorosoma petenense

Schooling open-water baitfish native to the southeastern US. Threadfin shad fill an ecological niche bluegill don't - they suspend in the water column and are visible to bass + striped bass that hunt mid-depth. Females produce 2,000-20,000 eggs per spawn. Best in 3+ acre warmer-climate ponds with open water + good plankton. Cold-sensitive: not viable in northern ponds where winter water drops below 40°F.
