Frequently asked

Is sand or gravel better for planted tanks?

For root-feeders (swords, vallisneria, crypts), aquasoil > gravel > sand. For epiphytes (anubias, java fern), substrate doesn't matter. Most planted tanks use aquasoil cap with sand or gravel.

Can I switch from gravel to sand?

Yes, but it triggers a mini-cycle. Best done in stages over 2-3 weeks: remove 1/3 gravel, add 1/3 sand, wait 1 week, repeat. Test ammonia daily.

What's the cheapest aquarium sand?

Black Diamond Blasting Sand from Tractor Supply - $15 per 50 lb bag. Inert, dark grey/black, totally aquarium-safe (it's the same stuff as Caribsea Tahitian Moon at 1/4 the price).

Does sand cause anaerobic dead zones?

Only at 2-3 inch depth without disturbance. Solution: keep sand under 1 inch OR add Malaysian Trumpet Snails (they bioturb). Don't worry about anaerobic pockets at 0.5-1" depth.
