Vermetid Snails

Vermetid snails are sessile snails that build thin tube-like calcium structures on rock. They cast a mucus net to catch food; the mucus irritates nearby coral.

What causes it

Hitchhiked in on rock or live coral.

Treatment options

Always treat in a separate quarantine tank.

Manual removal. Crush the tube + use a syringe to inject calcium hydroxide paste (kalk). Paste dissolves the tube and kills the snail.
Bumblebee snail (Engina). Bumblebee snails reportedly eat vermetids. Mixed effectiveness; works for some keepers.

Prevention

Aquaculture-only rock + dipping new pieces.
