They cost more than a standard tank but the alternative (drilling glass yourself or running a HOB overflow) is either risky or finicky. Any reef tank 75 gallons or larger should be reef-ready.
Core stack: pre-drilled tank with built-in overflow; matched sump (often sold as a set); return pump sized to provide 5-8x display turnover at the head height of your installation; bulkhead unions; flexible plumbing or PVC depending on your build style; check-valve OR siphon-break design (Herbie / Bean Animal preferred); skimmer space in the sump; full reef equipment stack on top of this plumbing foundation.
Light: standard reef-tank light selection. Filter: sump-based filtration is the entire point of reef-ready - skimmer in chamber 1, refugium in chamber 2, return in chamber 3. Run 5-8x turnover via the return pump.
No stocking constraints from being reef-ready - the stocking pool is the same as any reef tank. The benefit shows in your equipment sanity, not livestock options.
Most-common mistake: undersizing the return pump or skipping the safety overflow design. A failed siphon during a power outage floods the floor; a Herbie or Bean Animal overflow with backup is non-optional.
