Wave maker

Pulsing pump
DefinitionA wave maker (or wavemaker) creates oscillating flow patterns in the tank by alternating powerhead intensity. Creates random gyre + chaotic flow that mimics natural reef hydrodynamics.

In depth

Wave makers add dynamic flow to reef tanks. How they work: a controller (Ecotech MobiusWi-Fi, Maxspect Sync, Hydor Smart Wave) modulates one or more powerheads in patterns - constant on, slow oscillation, gyre, pulse, surge, lagoon. Why dynamic flow matters: SPS coral polyps require chaotic flow to expel waste + uptake nutrients. Static flow creates dead spots + detritus pockets. Random/oscillating mimics ocean hydrodynamics. Top brands: EcoTech Marine VorTech MP10/MP40/MP60 (silent, reverses with controller), Maxspect Gyre XF series (cross-flow, low profile), AI Nero (compact). Sizing: 25-40x display volume per hour combined flow for SPS. 15-25x for mixed reef. 10-15x for soft + LPS. Placement: opposing flow patterns from each side of the tank, creating a gyre. Avoid: single powerhead aimed at glass (creates dead opposing corner), continuous full-blast flow (sandbed scouring + coral stress).
