Step-by-step
Step 1: Prepare two cupsCup 1: 1 cup of tank water for the dip (mix in dipping solution per manufacturer instructions). Cup 2: 1 cup of clean saltwater for rinsing.
Step 2: Inspect the coralLook at the base, underside, and between branches with magnification. Mark any visible pests for extra blasting.
Step 3: Dip the coralPlace coral in dip cup. Set timer for manufacturer-recommended duration (5 minutes for
CoralRx, 5-10 for Bayer). Use a turkey baster to blast water across the coral 4-5 times during the dip - dislodges hidden pests.
Step 4: Rinse in clean saltwaterMove to rinse cup. Swish gently. This removes residual dip solution that could shock the coral.
Step 5: Discard the frag plugPests + eggs hide in the porous frag plug. Cut the coral off the plug and re-mount on a fresh plug or directly on rock with reef putty + CA gel.
Step 6: Mount and placeApply reef putty to the new plug, press the coral base in, drop CA gel for flash-bond. Place in moderate flow at lighting similar to vendor conditions.
Step 7: Quarantine 30 daysFor ultimate safety: place in a coral QT tank for 30 days. Monitor for late-hatching eggs. Brief dip again at day 7 + 14 to break any AEFW egg hatches.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best coral dip?
CoralRx and Bayer Advanced are the two most-used. CoralRx is gentler (good for sensitive softies). Bayer is more aggressive (best for SPS infestations).
How often should I dip coral?
Every new piece, every time. Established colonies do not need dipping unless infestation is suspected.
Will coral survive dipping?
Yes for healthy coral. Stressed or barely-alive coral may show retraction for 24-48 hours after but should recover. If dipping kills the coral, it was already failing before purchase.
