In the early 2000s, Steve Tyree formalized a system for naming, tracking, and marketing distinctive Acropora colonies as "Limited Edition" releases. Before LE, hobbyists named coral informally and lineages got lost as colonies changed hands. After LE, a named cultivar carried a documented frag history traceable back to an originating colony.
The Tyree LE program created the framework that ORA, JF, WWC, BC, RR, TSA, and every other coral originator now operates within. Every "named coral" page on Fast Aquatics exists because Tyree's system showed the hobby that named lineages could be a category.
Because LE cultivars trade hobbyist-to-hobbyist over decades, lineage authenticity is a community concern. A "Tyree Pink Lemonade" today may be a direct frag descendant or a misidentified pink millepora. Fast Aquatics is piloting a verified-lineage badge program for vendors who can document frag history back to Tyree-released stock.
Beyond LE coral naming, Steve Tyree authored "The Captive Reef" and other foundational reefkeeping texts. The LE catalog system continues to influence coral cultivar trading, exhibition standards, and the broader "named-line" economy in marine aquaculture.
