How to frag coral

The technique varies by coral type. SPS is bone-cutters and steady hands. LPS is a Dremel and patience. Soft coral is a scalpel and tank water. Below is the field-tested process across all three. For the deep version, see the full propagation guide.

SPS - the 7-step Acropora frag

1Pick the branch

Choose a healthy 1-2" branch on a colony with good color and active growth tips. Avoid the base or lowest branches.

2Cut clean

Bone cutters (or coral shears) - one decisive squeeze. Submerged cuts in a small container reduce stress.

3Dip + rinse

Bayer or Coral Rx for 5-10 min, then RO/DI rinse. Kills AEFW eggs, red bugs, and most other coral pests.

4Blot the base

Dab the cut end on a clean paper towel. Wet glue doesn't hold.

5Glue to plug

IC-Gel or 2-part epoxy on the frag plug, press the cut base in for 5 seconds. Don't smother any tissue.

6Place low-PAR for 2 weeks

150-200 PAR while it heals + encrusts. Acclimate up to display PAR over 3-4 weeks.

7Watch for stress signs

Pale tissue, RTN/STN, polyp retraction. Pull and re-dip if AEFW appears within 30 days.

LPS - cutting Euphyllia (torch, hammer, frogspawn)

Euphyllia frags depend on the species - branching Euphyllia (torch, frogspawn) is fragged at the branch joint with a Dremel + diamond wheel. Wall Euphyllia (some hammers, paraancora) is harder - cut through the skeletal wall between heads, working slowly to avoid splitting tissue.

FAQ - coral frags

What is a coral frag?

A coral frag (short for fragment) is a small piece cut from a parent colony, glued to a plug or rock, and grown out as an independent colony. Frags are how reefkeepers propagate, share, and sell coral - one parent can produce hundreds of frags over its lifetime, and the genetics are identical to the parent.

How do I dip a frag before adding it to my display?

Bayer Advanced Insect & Disease (the version with imidacloprid) for 5-10 min, then a clean RO/DI rinse, is the gold standard. Alternatives: Coral Rx (gentler, works on a wider range of pests), Reef Primer (TLF), or Polyplab Reef Primer. Always rinse after the dip - residual dip in your display tank kills inverts.

How long does a coral frag take to encrust the plug?

SPS: 2-4 weeks for full encrustation under medium PAR. LPS: 4-8 weeks. Zoanthids: spread across the plug in 6-12 weeks. Healing time depends on tank stability more than coral type - param swings stall encrustation.

What's the difference between a WYSIWYG frag and a generic frag?

WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get. The exact frag in the photo is what ships. Generic frags are sold from stock and a representative photo - the actual frag is similar but not identical. WYSIWYG carries a price premium and reduces "I expected something nicer" complaints.

What if my frag arrives DOA?

Every Fast Aquatics order includes the 4-hour DOA window. Within 4 hours of carrier-reported delivery, submit three photos (sealed bag with the specimen, closeup of the specimen, label visible on the box) through the claim form. Approved claims pay full refund or replacement on the next available shipment.
